History Student's Goals Jan. 2016 |
Survey Says...
In the first week of the 2nd Semester, I surveyed all of the students enrolled in both American and World History classes.
The one result I find interesting is the idea of Grade Acquisition.
When students were asked:
"What grade would they like to get in the class?" A, B, C, D,
or "Don't Care As Long as I pass"
The Majority of the 113 Responses (86.4%) claimed they would like to receive an A or B in the class.
Throughout the school year or academic school day, there isn't one student that wakes up and says to themselves "I hope I get a failing grade today."
Whether we are in our careers or in the classroom, when we don't reach our goals, it typically means there are a set of presuppositions that prevent us from reaching our self-described standards.
In my experience (both personal & professional), the majority of our shortcomings come in the form of social distractions, emotional detachment, or acts of perpetual apathy.
Granted, we are all provided a set of opportunities and contexts, but within these contexts we must encourage ourselves and our students to reach a little higher - "Win the Day".
If we can win more days than lose, we will reach our goals as professionals and as learners.
The objective of both history classes are to improve a student's reading, writing, and overall approach to learning.
History or "Historia" is about inquiry. This inquiry provides the insight to choose a different direction or maintain the established path of success. It is my goal - everyday - to help students improve their view of learning and take each class, lesson, and day as a step toward reaching their academic and personal goals.

<3. No one wakes up and thinks, "I hope I get a failing grade today." -- simple but powerful for everyone to remember. How do we put the foundations under our castles in the sky? One stepping stone at a time and seeking support as and when we recognize it. ;)
